Review: ‘Cassandra’s Dream’ (2007)

Finn posted this under Blog @ 4:53 pm, August 18, 2008

It came out to mixed and tepid box office numbers, but Woody Allen’s “Cassandra’s Dream” (2007) deserved better.

Much better.

Well-written and directed — and beautifully acted -– the neo noir thriller stars Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell as star-crossed, working class brothers in London.

McGregor plays the smart brother, who toils in his father’s money-losing restaurant while dreaming of a bigger life and chasing a woman out of his league. Farrell’s brother is a sensitive grease monkey/compulsive gambler who finds himself dangerously deep in debt.

When a rich uncle (Tom Wilkinson) asks for their help, it promises a way out for both brothers -– but at a terrible price.

‘Gemini Division’ launches

Finn posted this under Blog and Sci-Fi @ 9:28 am, August 18, 2008

NBC’s online sci-fi series ‘Gemini Division’ launched today on SciFi.com, NBC.com and a few other outlets.

My first-blush reaction after watching two episodes — meh.

The series, which is toplined by ‘Sin City’ siren Rosario Dawson, is set “five minutes” in the future (although it will take Microsoft a bit longer than that to deliver the nifty iPhone rip-off through which Dawson monologues her “transmissions” — a product placement, which gets to be a little intrusive by the second episode.)

Books bite-sized via DailyLit.com

Finn posted this under Blog and Fiction @ 11:37 am, August 5, 2008

If you’re like me, you read all day long on your computer — but don’t seem to have enough time to read all the books you want to get to.

Enter DailyLit.com, a new (to us) Web site that delivers bite-sized portions of books via e-mail or RSS on a regular schedule so you can get your reading done in five-minute chunks.

There are a slew of free books — and some paid books — to choose from.  The total library just hit the 1,000 mark.  So far they have 46 books categorized as sci-fi, which isn’t shabby.  There are only three crime and four horror titles now, but I have a hunch those numbers will grow.

Pretty cool.

Live from Loch Ness and The Sasquatch Watch

Theodore Carter posted this under Blog and Sci-Fi @ 1:42 pm, July 25, 2008

Who says the rise of science and technology have to ruin the world’s remaining mysteries? Maybe the internet will help us finally find Nessie or let us get a good long look at Bigfoot.

The next time you’re bored at work, log on for real-time snapshots of Loch Ness (or a live feed, depending on your browser). Or, you can visit the website of Thekentuckyincident.com and look through the lens of a camera focused on prime Bigfoot country.

You may not see anything, but isn’t it great to think you could?

Sci-fi blogs ready to rumble

Finn posted this under Blog and Sci-Fi @ 9:36 am, July 23, 2008

I’ve been waiting for the Tor.com sci-fi site to launch for awhile now — publisher Macmillan/Tor Books did a nice job of drumming up interest by releasing a series of e-books in advance of their launch.  And the site looks pretty nifty so far (it just launched, so I haven’t had much time to delve too deeply into it.)

But I just found out about Random House’s answer, Suvudu, thanks to a post on Mediabistro’s Gallycat blog.

Tor.com seems to have the early head-start, with stronger community features to go along with the louder buzz.  But I’ll withhold judgment for awhile, until I get a chance to tool through both sites.  One thing’s for sure — no matter which blog “wins,” sci-fi fans are coming out ahead.

Got an opinion?  Share it in the comments section.
